This project focused on using a camera to explore the theme of light and shadow. I used different light sources to experiment with the effects this would give to the overall image. I used both artificial light and natural light. I found that adding a stronger light source makes an ordinary image look more eye catching and interesting. I looked at how light effect many different things these include; buildings, structures, objects, reflections along with patterns and illusions. I chose to do a mixture of close up and far away pictures to create variety in my images. By adding light it instantly enhances shadows and straight away sets the mood of an image. It also creates a sense of depth that the viewer can find intriguing. This project helped me to discover the importance of light and shadow in images and how it can effect a photograph.
For this project I was inspired by the images by Paul Strand. His photographs influenced me with his use of strong lighting. This created contrast and strong shadow which I wanted to create in my own images. I also looked at work from Matteo Angelotti. He took pictures of architectural buildings and sculptures. His use of lighting creates strong sand interesting shadows which I felt made his images atmospheric which was also something I wanted to create. I researched into Darek Grabus and his photography work. he was inspired by realism, surrealism, abstraction and pop art which I found intriguing.
I tried to recreate some of their photographs with my own artistic flair.
This project consisted of 13 photoshoots each focused on a different theme under 'light and shadow'. For each photoshoot I constructed a thumbnails page which helped me discover which images where the most successful and highlighted the three I was taking forward to edit. For each image I edited them twice. By doing this it allowed me to experiment with the features on photoshop and allowed me to work out what features worked best for my images. This also gave me the opportunity to experiment with the composition by cropping areas to enhance the image. I took notes beside each edit to inform the reader of what changes I made and how it has enhanced the image. After repeating this for all 13 photoshoots I then went on to choose the best images out of these to use as my final 20 images
